This boxed set from Gollancz is a beautifully crafted work of art which contains all three volumes of the trilogy, namely The Blade Itself, Before They Are Hanged and Last Argument Of Kings. I recently completed The FIrst Law trilogy and wanted to share some of my thoughts on it. The other faction is in the south, the nation of Gurkhul, looking to avenge The second novel, Before They Are Hanged , has the characters dispatched on various quests. Abercrombie creates a story that grabs your throat right from the start and The only thing that bothered me about your review was that you did not mention the two strong female characters, Ferro and Ardee. First Law Trilogy: The Blade Itself, Before They Are Hanged and Last Argument of Kings by Joe Abercrombie Two wars are threatening Midderland: one from Logen's own Northmen, a cunning and savage band of barbarians that resemble Vikings in some ways. The First Law consists of The Blade Itself, Before They Are Hanged, and Last Argument of Kings. While I enjoyed The Blade Itself (Book 1 of The First Law trilogy), it wasn't until I read Before They Are Hanged (Book 2 of The First Law trilogy) that I really got into Abercrombie's writing. My favorite character was Sand dan Glokta, formerly a dashing and successful young officer who was captured and spent two years being tortured in a dungeon. First, for those readers unfamiliar with the series, a brief recap: The First Law trilogy is Joe Abercrombie's attempt at writing fantasy that both embraces conventional trappings…and skewers them. I find the titles all fresh and intriguing, if a little confusing. So in “The Blade Itself”, many characters are introduced that seem like walking Other than that, “Before They Are Hanged” really comes down to two things: 1) characters and 2) the story. Last Argument of Kings is the third and concluding volume of The First Law Trilogy, following on from The Blade Itself (reviewed here) and Before They Are Hanged (reviewed here).
