I gave up on Haskell before because it seemed too hard. Even such papers labeled “gentle,” as “A Gentle Introduction to Haskell ” [1], can turn out to be less “gentle” than expected for those not familiar with the field. You can have a look at book “The Haskell School Of Expression” http://books.google.com/books?id=lQbth9j5j9oC&printsec=frontcover&dq=haskell. I was learning haskell a few years ago and I was recommended mr. I'll use this IO code as a starting point translating his code that uses Haskell's IO monad. I think I would buy: "Smalltalk the language and the implementation" (The blue book)and "Types and Programming languages". Maybe it is, I don't know, but having found the 'Haskell School of Expression' book got my interest up again. I'd like to write a program for algorithmic music composition. Created on 03 Sep 2006, by Unknown IP Address, read more… I'm pleased to report that my review of the Haskell School of Expression: Learning Functional Programming through Multimedia just got published on Slashdot. It is from 1999 but is still good. I'm starting to work through Paul Hudak's The Haskell School of Expression and porting the code to Scala. Hudak's book "The Haskell School of Expression". When I first read about it in the Haskell School of Expression, I said wtf… here I am trying to escape from the imperative and object oriented world, and now I have to deal with this! The book by Hudak ("The Haskell school of expression") appears to be the only one touching on some sort of multimedia or music interfaces. This was my first foray into functional programming and it turned out this wasn't a great book to start with. The reactive animation example shows beautifully how a domain specific language can be embedded into Haskell. So far so good, I'm 95 pages in and all is well. -The Haskell School of Expression I've already read the above, so I won't buy them again. PC sent me a copy of Hudak ;s The Haskell School of Expression for my birthday.
